Tragedies

Tragedy is a type of play with a sad end, where almost everybody dies.

Shakespeare wrote a lot of tragedies: “Romeo and Juliet”, “Othello”, “Julius Caesar” and “Hamlet”.

Hamlet

Plot:

King Hamlet has been killed by his brother Claudius, who becomes the new King of Denmark and marries the old King's widow Gertrude. Only Prince Hamlet is mad of sadness. One night he meets his father's ghost, who tells him about the betrayal of Claudius and asks for revenge. 

Young Hamlet becomes mad of hate for his uncle. His beloved Othelia commits suicide, but it does not stop him. Claudius begins to suspect that the Prince knows the truth and gives him poison. Hamlet battles his uncle and kills him, but slowly dies with a lot of pain caused by the poison. His mother hears about the truth and kills herself for her son. In the end Denmark is left with no king, queen and prince.
